On the 83rd Birthday of Gulzar(18th Aug 1934 Born at Dina, Pakistan ),I look at the the songs and poetry he writes.His film journey started as a song writer with BANDINI(1963) with the famous song of Lata"Mora Gora Ang Layle"He is relevant even today.His songs are for every mood, and every occasion.He has hovered around in the background while you were at the nearest nightclub (Dhan Te Nan) or at the crossroads, worrying about your place in the big city (Ek Akela Is Shahar Mein...). He has helped you survive heartbreak (Mera Kuch Saamaan) and celebrate love (Aaj Kal Paon Zameen Par).
He is a magician of words,he presents a different side to every emotion, and brought new meaning to every situation. He can say very convoluted things in simple words and can make simple inscrutable. It's up to you, what you like.

.His lyrics however did not gain much attention until the 1969's Khamoshi, where his song "Humne Dekhi Hai Un Aankhon Ki Mehekti Khushboo" became popular. The song for the film Guddi(1971 ) "Humko Man Ki Shakti Dena" was a prayer which is still sung in many schools in India.His song "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire(2008) brought him the Oscar Award.The song received international acclaim and won him a Grammy Award (shared with Rahman) in the category of Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.

He never chased the spotlight; it was the other way around. Interestingly, the enigma of this 83-year-old poet-director is more or less intact. Gulzar�s respect among his fans is something that makes them overlook his cynicism.He is unique in bollywood.There�s no poetry on the silver screen of Hindi cinema like Gulzar�s

Remember the song Mera kuchh saamaan tumhaare paas pada hai,from Ijaazat sung by Asha Bhosle,The song recalls the bitter-sweet moments the lovers shared: 116 moonlit nights, surviving a rainy walk under a single umbrella, complaints and promises, and a night wrapped in a letter I doubt there are many who haven�t lived what is described here, who haven�t remembered these described moments long after they�re dead, and who haven�t cried a little in memory.

The journey that started with Mera gora rang lei le (Bandini, 1963) continues in all its glory, and in all possibility Gulzar�s repertoire is not yet short of deadly creations. Yes, we miss the director of timeless films such as Mere Apne, Koshish, Parichay, Mausam, Aandhi, Kitaab, Lekin, Ijazat and Maachis, but it�s fine as long as his pen is producing mesmerising songs.
Gulzar also wrote poetry, dialogues and scripts. He was awarded Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award � the highest award in Indian cinema. He has won several Indian National Film Awards, 20 Filmfare Awards, one Academy Award and one Grammy Award.

Anand Bakshi (born on 21st July 1920-Died on 30th March 2002) was a Lyricist of Bollywood Films.Anand Bakshi penned some of the most memorable songs that has ever been produced by the Hindi film industry.With over 600 films to his credit and having worked with the best Music Directors in the Hindi film industry,He made a hit Jodi with Lakshmikant Pyarelal and later with R D Burman,in this Blog I am discussing his association with R D Burman.

Anand Bakshi and R D Burman worked jointly in 84 films.The first time they worked jointly in 1965 film Teesra Kaun starring Feroz Khan and Kalpna .The song "Pyar Ka Fasana Bana Le Dil Deewana" sung by Lata and Mukesh became popular.But both of them clicked together with Kati Patang(1970) starring Rajesh Khanna and Asha Parekh.All the songs written by him were instant hit.After that came Hare Rama Hare Krishna(1971) and the song Dum Maro Dum became the song of the year.This year was very good for both,6 films were released that year,Amar Prem(1971) with the song Chingari Koi Bhadke became very popular.
In 1972, 4 films of them released,songs of Jawani Deewani,Seeta Aur Geeta and Apna Desh were highlight of that year.

After Hare Rama Hare Krishna Dev Anand kept both in his forthcoming films.In fact the combination of kishore Kumar R D Burman and Anand Bakshi became a deadly Combination,this combination created many immortal Songs.

Though Anand Bakshi was writing songs for many Music Directors since 1956 but he had to wait till 1969 for an opportunity to work with SD Burman. It is well known that RD Burman played an important role in the music of Aradhana (1969) After that he went on to work with SD Burman in many other films including Anurag (1972), Jugnu (1973), Prem Nagar (1974) and Chupke Chupke (1975),

When you remember Qamar Jalalabadi the first thing comes in our mind is the Immortal song he wrote for the film Pyar Ki Jeet in 1948 "Is Dil Ke Tukde Hazaar Huye, Koi Yahan Gira Koi Wahan Gira" and "Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu" from Howrah Bridge 1954 film.He was one of the best lyricists of the Golden Age of Hindi music
He was born in a Punjabi family on 9th March 1917 in Amritsar, in a small town called Jalalabad, and was named Om Prakash.He is known as Qamar Jalalabadi which was a Takhallus given by the person Amar who inspired him to write.
After completing his matriculation from Amritsar, Qamarji embarked on his journalistic career journey by writing for Lahore based newspapers like Daily Milap, DailyPratap, Nirala, Star Sahakar. The lure of the Film industry brought him to Pune in the the early Forties.
In 1942, he wrote lyrics for his first film Zamindar which was a Pancholi Pictures production and the songs of this film were very well received, especially the song sung by Shamshad Begum "Duniya me garibonko aaraam nahi milta", which also had a line or two written by writer and poet Behzad Lucknawi.
Some of his memorable songs from his early include "sunti nahi duniya kabhi fariyaad kissi ki" (Renuka, 1947) and the ghazal "Dil kis liye rota hai...pyar ki duniya me, aisa hi hota hai" (sung by Naseem Banu for the film Mulaquat in 1947). The noted dancer Sitara Devi performed some of his songs in Chand (1944). Chand was one of the earliest of Qamarji's successful and memorable films.
He was very versatile. On one hand he wrote mesmeric duets like "sun meri saanwari mujhko kahin tum bhool na jana�" sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd. Rafi (film: Aansoo 1953) and on the other hand he penned comic relief songs like �khush hai zamana aaj pehli tarikh hai� endured with full throttle gusto by Kishore Kumar (film: Pehli Tarikh-1954). This song turned into veritable anthem and was played on Radio Ceylon on the first of every month for decades,
He had a long writing career nearly for 4 decades.In his long career he wrote for almost great Music directors of that time.Starting from Ghulam Haider to G. Damle, Pt. Amarnath, Khemchand Prakash, Husnlal Bhagatram, S.D. Burman, Anil Biswas, Shyam Sunder, Sajjad Hussain, C. Ramchandra, Madan Mohan, Sudhir Phadke, Shiv Dayal Batish, Sardar Malik, Ravi, Avinash Vyas and in the latter phase of his career with O.P Nayyar, Kalyanji Anandji, Sonik Omi, Uttam Singh and Laxmikant Pyarelal as well.
In his personal life, Jalalabadi was a highly religious person and he chanted excerpts from the Bhagavad Gita, the Koran as well as Bible.He died on 3rd Feb 2003 in Mumbai.Though he is no more with us but his words will always be there with us.

Kaifi Azmi (14thJanuary 1919 � 10 May 2002) was an Indian Urdu poet. He will always be remembered who brought Urdu literature to Indian motion pictures.At the age eleven, Azmi wrote his first ghazal Itna To Zindagi Mein Kisi Ki Khalal Pade.Most of the people, including his father, thought he recited his elder brother's ghazal. When his elder brother denied it, his father and his clerk decided to test his poetic talent. They gave him one of the lines of a couplet and asked him to write a ghazal in the same meter and rhyme. Azmi accepted the challenge and completed a ghazal. This particular ghazal was to become a rage in undivided India and it was immortalised as it was sung by legendary ghazal singer, Begum Akhtar.
Kaifi Azmi wrote his first lyrics for the film Buzdil, directed by Shaheed Latif and music by SD Burman, released in 1951.As a lyricist and songwriter, though he wrote for numerous films, he will always be remembered for Guru Dutt's Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) and Chetan Anand's Haqeeqat (1964), India's greatest war film. Some notables films for which he wrote lyrics include Kohra(1964), Anupama (1966), Uski Kahani (1966), Saat Hindustani (1969), Shola Aur Shabnam, Parwana (1971), Bawarchi (1972), Pakeezah (1972), Hanste Zakhm (1973), Arth (1982) and Razia Sultan (1983). For Naunihal (1967), he wrote the song "Meri Aawaz Suno Pyar ka Raaz Suno" (Hear my voice, hear the secret of love) sung by Mohammad Rafi. The song is picturised over the funeral procession of Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru.
He was the winner of SAHITYA ACADEMY AWARD for Urdu in 1975.He was the recipient of Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award. In 1998, Government of Maharashtra conferred the Jyaneshwara Award on him. He was also honoured with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Fellowship for lifetime achievement
In 2000, he was conferred the first Millennium Award by the Government of Delhi and the Delhi Urdu Academy. He has also been honoured with a doctorate from Vishva Bharati University, Santiniketan.
Kaifi Azmi was married to Shaukhat Azmi. They have a daughter, Shabana Azmi (An Indian Actress of film, television and theatre) and a son, Baba Azmi (Indian Cinematographer).

He was a man deeply connected to his grassroots, not just in Mumbai but also in his hometown Azamgarh. Shabana Azmi, the beloved daughter of Kaifi, says, �The tireless and painstaking efforts of Kaifi during the last two decades have brought home road, electricity, a small hospital, a school and a post office in Mijwan, his birth place in Azamgarh District. To bring all these facilities to a small village was almost a distant dream because obstacles befell at every step (due to unscrupulous government officers). Indomitable will and an extraordinary skill to organize people kept him dynamic throughout his life�.
His major poetic works include Jhankar (1943), Aakhri Shab (1947), Aawara Sajde (1973), Meri Aawaz Suno (1974). He was an active member of IPTA (Indian People�s Theatre Association) and later its president.
Azmi died on 10 May 2002 at around the age of eighty three. A play based on his life, his works and the memoir of his wife, Shaukat Azmi � Yadon Ki Rahguzar (Down Memory Lane), was written and performed by Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi, and performed in India as well as abroad in 2006.

His association with Chetan Anand from 1964 film Haqekat and later on his all films produced some great songs. His greatest feat as a writer was Chetan Anand's Heer Raanjha (1970) wherein the entire dialogue of the film was in verse. It was a tremendous achievement and one of the greatest feats of Hindi film writing.
