On the 76th Birth Anniversary Of Sadhana,the heart-throb of the nation in 1960s,we look back at the craze of this great actress.She belonged to an era when Hindi cinema was transitioning from the slow �50s to the more playful, chaotic �60s.Starting her career as heroine in Bollywood through 1960's romantic film Love in Simla. Her fringe haircut became popular during the 1960s and came to be known as "Sadhana cut".Sadhana is also credited for bringing into fashion tight chudidar-kurta. She went with this concept of gracefully changing the traditional loose salwar kameez to her director Yash Chopra for 1965's film Waqt.Initially Yash Chopra was not agreed for this change but Sadhana with the help of her fashion designer Bhanu Athaiya showed him a sample, which he liked. The trend lasted well in the 1970s and can be seen to be adopted by many actresses.
After Love In Shimla her 2nd film Parakh was released.in this film she played the simple village girl,she had to stick her fringe back in order to match the simple village girl she played here.Even without that she looked beautiful.Then came Hum Dono in 1962 The film stars Dev Anand in a double role, and also has Nanda his co-heroine.The film was a big hit that established Sadhana as a leading actress.In the same year Ek Musafir Ek Hasina and Asli Naqli released, both were successful.at the Box Office.In 1963, Sadhana played her first role in a technicolour film Mere Mehboob directed by H. S. Rawail. The film was the "blockbuster" of 1963.She now became the most sought after heroine of Bollywood.
In 1964, she played a double role in the first of the suspense-thriller trilogy, Woh Kaun Thi? This white-sari-clad performance opposite Manoj Kumar earned her first Filmfare nomination as Best Actress.The film was a box office "Hit". Raj Khosla cast her in two more successful mystery films, Mera Saaya (1966) and Anita (1967) thus making her famous as the "Mystery girl". Mera Saaya, a box office "Super Hit".
Sadhana had health issues due to her thyroid, which she got treated in Boston.She was doing limited films,earlier also she did 2 or 3 films in a year.Her most of the films fared well in Box Office and few of them were Mega Hits such as Mere Mehboob,Waqt,Arzoo and Ek Phool Do Maali.
Raj Khosla was the director who worked with her in many movies.three of their films Woh Kaun Thi, Mera Saaya and Anita presented her a beautiful woman who haunts the hero,who does with her beauty. Sadhana had a unique quality that she blooms and blossoms,she sparkled in her songs.Think of brilliant smile that opens in Tujhe Jeevan Ki Dor Se Baandh Liya Hai or Tera Mera Pyar Amar from Asli Naqli,the softness of Jahan Mein Aisa of Hum Dono or the magnetic pull of the call Lag Jaa Gale of Woh Kaun Thi.
Sadhana died on 25 December 2015 in Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai

Ghazal has been an integral part of Bollywood music,The filmi-ghazal is a genre of filmi based on ghazal poetry in Hindi or Urdu. It�s a unique combination of poetry, melody and singing.In the 1940s ,50s, and 60s Hindi film industry attracted many well known poets and writers of Hindi/Urdu. Initialy Ghazals were very similar to other Hindustani light classical forms such as the dadra or, thumri.later on the ghazal usually had a form which is not too dissimilar to many film songs. Some of the high quality ghazals like Ujdi Hui Hai Ishq Ki Duniya Tere Bagair,zinda hoon iss tarah ki gham-e-zindagi nahin, tumhaare bulaane ko jee chaahta hai, rehne laga hai dil mein andhera tere baghair are still remembered today.
I am starting with a ghazal Duniya e aarzoo ko mita kar chale gaye from the film Barsaat Ki Ek Raat
released in 1948 sung by Munawwar Sultana, Music was given by Ghulam Haider.It is said that Munawwar Sultana received musical training from Ghulam Haider in the 1930s when he was composing non-filmy songs for Jien-o-Phone record company. However, music director Pandit Amarnath gave her chance to sing in her first two Hindi/Urdu films � �Albeli� (1945) and �Dhamki� (1945).Readers should not confused with this singer Munnawar Sultana with the actress Munnawar sultana,both were different.The singer Munawwar Sultana (08/11/1924 � 20/05/1995) was a radio singer in Punjabi and Urdu songs on All India Radio, Lahore in the 40s.After the partition she remained in Pakistan,During her pre-independent filmy career, she sang about 20 songs.

I am presenting here a ghazal �guroor-o-naaz se ghesu ka bal khaana nahin achchaa� written by Aarzoo Lucknowi for the film PARAKH (1944).Only the audio clip is available but it is apparent that Kaushalya has sung this ghazal on herself.

When we talk about Ghazal how can we not say about Ghalib.Over a period of years, many of his Ghazals became famous and were used in several films and were sung privately by many well known singers.Ghalib�s one particular Ghazal �Dil E Nadaan,tujhe hua kya hain � is perhaps one of the most popular Ghazals used in films.This Ghazal was sung by many singers in different Hindi films so far,I am taking from the film Apna Desh(1949) Sung by Pushpa Hans music was given by Purushottam.Today's generation may be unknown of Pushpa hans but old timer Punjabi readers will recall this name with Nostalgia.

Momin Khan �Momin� (1800-1851) was one of the prominent Urdu poets in the Mughal court during early 1800s. He was the contemporary and a close friend of Mirza Ghalib.One of his most famous ghazals by which Momin Khan �Momin� is known worldwide is �wo jo hum mein tum mein karaar thha tumhen yaad ho ke na yaad ho�. This ghazal has been rendered by many famous singers as well as upcoming singers.This ghazal was also sung in the film �Shikaayat� (1948) by Kalyani, Manik Dadarkar ( aka Manik Varma) and Chorus. If �deewaana banaana hai to deewaana banaa de� (1925) heralded the arrival of Begum Akhtar as a ghazal singer, �ae mohabbat tere anjaam pe ronaa aayaa� (early 1950s) consolidated her position in ghazal singing paving the way for her to be bestowed upon the title of �mallika-e-ghazal� This was written by shakeel Badayuni and composed by Begham akhtar is a Non Filmy Ghazal

It was Talat�s reign in Hindi film Ghazal. People were mesmerised with his quivering velvety voice and the � dard � with which Talat sang his numbers.

His voice belongs to an era when gentleness was a virtue. His songs fall on ears like soft petals on wet earth. His melody was � felt � rather than � heard �. He was named the King Of Ghazals.Talat became Dilip kumar's voice initially His flawless Urdu Diction and the way he articulated the poetry in the song enhanced the song�s appeal. Dilip Kumar insisted for Talat. However a slight misunderstanding with Naushad gave way to Rafi in Deedar,He was Dilip�s voice in different composers� films. �Mera jeevan saathi� for Naushad(Babul-50), �seene mein sulagte� for Anil Biswas(Tarana-51), �ye hawa ye raat� for Sajjad(Sangdil-52), �Aye mere dil kahin� for Shankar Jaikishan(Daag-52) and �Shaam e gham ki kasam� for Khayyam(Footpath-53).Here is my one of his favorite

Lataji vocalized her first ghazal � the mind-blowing Dil-e-naashaad ko jeene ki hasrat ho gayee tumse under the baton of Hansraj Bahl in Chunariya (1948). Her superb rendition of this none-too-easy a number with expression, enunciation and mastery on its many murkis in all octaves is just breath-taking.

TALAT MAHMOOD WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AS ONE OF THE GREATEST SINGING STARS OF ALL TIMES.The mellowness, sweetness and pathos in his voice set him apart from all the other singers. Here was a voice that was fresh ! The style absolutely new !! He was unanimously hailed as "The King Of Ghazals", a title he consolidated over the period of years to become the greatest name in ghazals.
He was very handsome so he was offered the hero roles by many producersThe producer -director of the film 'Dil-e-Nadaan', A.R. Kardar, launched an 'All India Beauty Contest' to hunt for a beautiful girl who would play the heroine opposite the young and immensely talented superstar Talat Mahmood.Latter he worked in 13 films with top heroines of that time like Nutan, Mala Sinha, Suraiya, Shyama, Nadira and others.The first film he did as hero was Rajlakshmi in 1945 opposite Kananbala.In 1951 he did Araam with Dev Anand and Madhubala.The last time he apeared in Sone Ki Chidiya opposite Nutan in 1958.
His reputation as a ghazal singer was not limited to his hometown of Lucknow, but it reached the city that proved to shape his destiny � Calcutta. In 1944 came the hit Tasveer teri dil mera behela nah sake gi. Its popularity was so phenomenal and unrivaled that even today it remains one of the top selling non-film discs.
In 1949 Talat moved to Bombay, to sing for the Hindi film industry. His name and fame had already preceded him and soon he was flooded with offers. His big break came with the song Ae dil mujhe aisi jagha le chal jahan koi na ho composed by music director Anil Biswas for the soundtrack of the movie Arzoo.
In the 50s Talat Mahmood with Muhammad Rafi and Mukesh.were the leading Male Singers,all three of them gave many immortal songs in that Golden Era of Hindi film music.Talat exerted a profound influence upon the ghazal singing of his time with his immensely melodious voice and artistic craftsmanship, particularly suitable for typically semi-classical ghazal singing.
