Asha Bhosle, the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar was born on 8th September, 1933 in a Gomantak Marathi Brahmin family in Sangli, Maharashtra. She was the third among five siblings. Her father, Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar was a renowned classical singer and stage actor. Her first foray into Hindi film playback happened with the song Saawan Aaya from the film Chunariya with composer Hansraj Behl in 1948. When she was 16,
This talented singer can sing a ghazal and a peppy cabaret number with amazing levels of energy and style. Be it the romantic "Oh Mere Sona Re" or the sensuous "Aaiye Meherban" or the peppy "Kambakth Ishq", Asha Bhonsle can add life to any song. she has sung in almost all genres including film music, pop, bhajans, ghazals, traditional Indian classical music, qawwalis, folk songs, and Rabindra Sangeets.
Initially her songs were basically meant for the sidelined roles like vamps, cabaret numbers or C-grade movies but it was O P Nayyar who gave her real break with C I D in 1956.With O. P Nayyar, Asha gave out hits after hits like Aaiye Meherban, Deewana Hua Badal, Isharon Isharon Mein, Aao Huzur Tumko, Ude Jab Jab Zulfein Teri, etc.
S D Burman was the other Music Director who understood her versatility. She and S.D Burman created many hit soundtracks for movies like Kaala Pani, Kaala Bazaar, Insaan Jaag Utha, Lajwanti, Sujata and Teen Deviyaan.
Her collaboration with R.D Burman took her the peak of her career. The duo of Asha and R.D Burman produced hits after hits starting from Teesri Manzil in 1966.A popular song Jaane Jaa from the movie Jawaani Diwaani (1972) required her to switch from high pitch to low almost simultaneously which she did with utmost ease and perfection. The song, Dum Maro Dum from the movie Hare Rama Hare Krishna showed an entirely new side of her talent. The romantic Chura Liya Hai Tumne from the movie Yaadon Ki Baarat is hummed even today and is considered to be one of the most romantic songs of this century.
In the 90's, she experimented with peppy numbers and produced hits like Tanha Tanha, Yaire, Kambakth Ishq, Chori Pe Chori, with much younger music directors like A.R. Rahman, Anu Malik, and Sandeep Chowta.
She received the Dada SahebPhalke award in 2000. She was honoured with the Padma Vibushan Award by the Government of India in 2008. She won 8 Filmfare awards in the best Female Playback Singer Category in the years 1968, 1969, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, and 1979. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Filmfare in 2001. She has won 2 national Awards, in 1981 for the song Dil Cheez Kya hai from Umrao Jaan and in 1986 for Mera Kuchh Saman from the film Ijaazat. In this Blog I am posting her Award Winning Songs

On the 41st Death Anniversary of Mukesh I look back at the Magical Combination of this legendary singer with SJ and Raj Kapoor. Mukesh debuted as (actor-)singer in 1941 with Nirdosh, his association with Raj Kapoor took place in 1949 when he sang for RK in Aag,the song was Zinda Huwe, Is Tarah Ke Hamen composed by Ram Ganguli. Raj Kapoor realized that now he found his soul in the voice of Mukesh. In the very next film Barsaat 1950,Shankar Jaikishan made their debut as music director, from this film the trio of Mukesh,SJ and Raj Kapoor formed. After that they gave many immortal songs to Bollywood
.
Barsaats music was dominated by Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh getting two duets with her. But their next venture, Awara (1951), had the title track which became a global sensation making Raj Kapoor-Nargis one of the most recognizable faces abroad, and Indias cultural ambassador.
In the same year, in a non-RK film Baadal, too, SJ created an outstanding solo, Main raahi bhatakane wala hun, and an equally good duet with Lata Mangeshkar, Ae dil na mujhse chhupa. RK-SJs next film Aah (1953) didnt fire up the box-office, but what great songs Mukesh sang! The two solos, Raat andheri door kinara, Chhoti si ye zindagani, and the two duets with Lata Mangeshkar, Jaane na jigar pahchaane nazar, Aa ja re ab mera dil pukara are among the most loved songs for Mukesh fans.
With Mukesh becoming identified as Raj Kapoors voice, in almost all the films of Raj Kapoor whether under RK banner or outside, if SJ were the music director Mukesh was almost invariably the voice for him. And every film had great songs remembered till today:Here are some of the immortal songs of this Trio.

On the 83rd Birthday of Gulzar(18th Aug 1934 Born at Dina, Pakistan ),I look at the the songs and poetry he writes. His film journey started as a song writer with BANDINI(1963) with the famous song of Lata"Mora Gora Ang Layle"He is relevant even today. His songs are for every mood, and every occasion. He has hovered around in the background while you were at the nearest nightclub (Dhan Te Nan) or at the crossroads, worrying about your place in the big city (Ek Akela Is Shahar Mein...). He has helped you survive heartbreak (Mera Kuch Saamaan) and celebrate love (Aaj Kal Paon Zameen Par).
He is a magician of words,he presents a different side to every emotion, and brought new meaning to every situation. He can say very convoluted things in simple words and can make simple inscrutable. It's up to you, what you like.

Song from Khamoshi, 1969

.His lyrics however did not gain much attention until the 1969's Khamoshi, where his song "Humne Dekhi Hai Un Aankhon Ki Mehekti Khushboo" became popular. The song for the film Guddi(1971 ) "Humko Man Ki Shakti Dena" was a prayer which is still sung in many schools in India. His song "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire(2008) brought him the Oscar Award. The song received international acclaim and won him a Grammy Award (shared with Rahman) in the category of Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.

He never chased the spotlight; it was the other way around. Interestingly, the enigma of this 83-year-old poet-director is more or less intact. Gulzars respect among his fans is something that makes them overlook his cynicism. He is unique in bollywood.Theres no poetry on the silver screen of Hindi cinema like Gulzars

Song from Bandini 1963

.
Remember the song Mera kuchh saamaan tumhaare paas pada hai, from Ijaazat sung by Asha Bhosle,The song recalls the bitter-sweet moments the lovers shared: 116 moonlit nights, surviving a rainy walk under a single umbrella, complaints and promises, and a night wrapped in a letter I doubt there are many who havent lived what is described here, who havent remembered these described moments long after theyre dead, and who havent cried a little in memory.

The journey that started with Mera gora rang lei le (Bandini, 1963) continues in all its glory, and in all possibility Gulzars repertoire is not yet short of deadly creations. Yes, we miss the director of timeless films such as Mere Apne, Koshish, Parichay, Mausam, Aandhi, Kitaab, Lekin, Ijazat and Maachis, but its fine as long as his pen is producing mesmerising songs.
Gulzar also wrote poetry, dialogues and scripts. He was awarded Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award the highest award in Indian cinema. He has won several Indian National Film Awards, 20 Filmfare Awards, one Academy Award and one Grammy Award.

On the 85th Birth Anniversary Of the Legend Meena Kumari(Born on 1st August 1932),I look at various dimensions of Meena Kumari. She shot to fame with Vijay Bhatts Baiju Bawra (1952). She was born as Mahjabeen Bano to Ali Baksh and Iqbal Begum.Starting her carrier as a child artist she became the superstar in the 1950s and 60s.Unlike today's stars, she had many dimensions - she read poetry, had literary friends,a great voice sang for films, aspired to the higher life and was an alcoholic.she had a volatile love life .
She married Kamal Amrohi 15 years older to her who was already married having children, their marriage was not happy marriage. She threw herself in love with a series of men, most famously with a young and upcoming Dharmendra. She was a modern and emancipated woman.she never got true love.
She has been a part of several cult movies like Baiju Bawra, Sahab, Biwi Aur gulam, Pakeezah, Parineeta, Yahudi, Aarti, Kaajal and Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi. Best remembered for her role as alcoholic Chhoti Bahu, in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962).
Meena Kumari was also a talented Urdu poetess under the pseudonym Naaz. According to Naushad Ali, Kumari's poetry clearly reflected her angst. Haunting, crystalline, and precisely observed, Kumari's poetry reveals a side of her personality that was rarely on display in her films. It proved that she was a much more sensitive and self-aware woman than her fans tend to realize.Shortly after Meena Kumaris death in 1972, at the age of only 39, the lyricist and poet Gulzar arranged for Hind Pocket Books to publish the matinee idols poetry.
Meena Kumari is the most written Actress of Bollywood, lots of Biography and books are written are on her.Naushad Alis short biography, Actress Meena Kumari: From The Cradle To The Grave, summarizes her lifeher beginnings as a child actor, her debut in the stunt movie called (of all things) Leatherface), her rise to fame as an adult actor with Baiju Bawra, her unrequited love for a leading man, her marriage with, and divorce from, a leading director, her slide into isolation and alcoholism.Meena Kumari The Poet: A Life Beyond Cinema by Noorul Hasan a former professor of English with interests from Thomas Hardy to Firaq Gorakhpuri, has brought together several of Meena Kumaris verses, published in English translation for the first time. Vetaran Journalist Late Vinod Mehta wrote a book on Meena Kumari-"Meena kumari the Classic Biography"
.She sang many great songs and earned her recognition in singing too. Merely at the age of 8 yrs, she sang a beautiful song with Beena Kumari "Tora Kajra Lagoon Mori Rani" from the film Bahen which released in 1941.She sang 3 songs in the movie Duniya Ek Sarai(1947)...Music was composed by Hansraj Behl. Then She sang around 7 songs in Piya Ghar Aaja(1947).Meena Kumari also sang few words for a song in Pinjre Ki Panchi(1966) with Manna Dey.
Music by Salil Choudhary and lyrics by Gulzar.

Meena Kumari worked with Khayyam Saheb for an album I WRITE, I RECITE in the year 1970.
There were total 8 Ghazals in this album. When she recited these ghazals, She was not well..
But, She rendered all the ghazals beautifully with her divine voice.

Manoj Kumar, also known as Bharat Kumar for his nationalist and patriotic films like Purab Aur Paschim, Upkar and Kranti was born on 24th July 1937.He may not have Dev Anand's inborn flamboyance (or scarves collection) or Shammi Kapoor's maverick style but Manoj Kumar is a picture of sleek sophistication in his reliable stock of tweeds, bandhgalas and berets.
The actor got his first big break in 1960 with Kaanch Ki Gudia, but it was Hariyali Aur Raasta that established him. He went on to star in romantic hits like Honeymoon, Apna Banake Dekho, Naqli Nawab, Do Badan, Paththar Ke Sanam, Sajan and Sawan Ki Ghata.Kumar's image as the patriotic hero started with the 1965 film Shaheed, based on the life of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, . After the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri asked him to create a film based on the popular slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kissan (hail the soldier, hail the farmer). The result was Kumar's magnum opus and his directorial debut, Upkaar (1967). In it, he played both a soldier and a farmer. The film was also noted for the famous song Mere Desh Ki Dharti, written by Gulshan Bawra, composed by Kalyanji-Anandji and sung by Mahendra Kapoor. Upkaar was a hit and won Kumar his first Filmfare Best Director Award.
Manoj Kumar is a multitalented person he not only acted but also produced, directed and edited many films. His obsession with inventive camera angles and unique compositions is most visible and much appreciated by his colleagues, collaborators and cinemagoers. He has Keen ears for the music also.He deserves an extra pat on his back for extracting many unforgettable melodies like Shor's Ek Pyaar Ka Nagma, Kranti's Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi, Purab Aur Paschim's Koi Jab Tumhara Hriday Tod De, Upkar's Mere Desh Ki Dharti or Roti Kapda Aur Makaan's Main Na Bhoolunga, from his music directors and lyricists.
After Kranti, Kumar's career began to decline in the 1980s as all of his subsequent films failed at the box office. In 1989, he cast Pakistani actors Mohammad Ali and Zeba in his film Clerk. He quit acting after his appearance in the 1995 film Maidan-E-Jung. He directed his son, Kunal Goswami, in the 1999 film Jai Hind which had a patriotic theme. The film was a flop and was the last film Kumar worked on.
In 1992, he was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India. India's highest award in cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, was bestowed him in 2016.

TALAT MAHMOOD WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AS ONE OF THE GREATEST SINGING STARS OF ALL TIMES.The mellowness, sweetness and pathos in his voice set him apart from all the other singers. Here was a voice that was fresh ! The style absolutely new !! He was unanimously hailed as "The King Of Ghazals", a title he consolidated over the period of years to become the greatest name in ghazals.
He was very handsome so he was offered the hero roles by many producersThe producer -director of the film 'Dil-e-Nadaan', A.R. Kardar, launched an 'All India Beauty Contest' to hunt for a beautiful girl who would play the heroine opposite the young and immensely talented superstar Talat Mahmood.Latter he worked in 13 films with top heroines of that time like Nutan, Mala Sinha, Suraiya, Shyama, Nadira and others. The first film he did as hero was Rajlakshmi in 1945 opposite Kananbala. In 1951 he did Araam with Dev Anand and Madhubala. The last time he apeared in Sone Ki Chidiya opposite Nutan in 1958.
His reputation as a ghazal singer was not limited to his hometown of Lucknow, but it reached the city that proved to shape his destiny Calcutta. In 1944 came the hit Tasveer teri dil mera behela nah sake gi. Its popularity was so phenomenal and unrivaled that even today it remains one of the top selling non-film discs.
In 1949 Talat moved to Bombay, to sing for the Hindi film industry. His name and fame had already preceded him and soon he was flooded with offers. His big break came with the song Ae dil mujhe aisi jagha le chal jahan koi na ho composed by music director Anil Biswas for the soundtrack of the movie Arzoo.
In the 50s Talat Mahmood with Muhammad Rafi and Mukesh.were the leading Male Singers, all three of them gave many immortal songs in that Golden Era of Hindi film music.Talat exerted a profound influence upon the ghazal singing of his time with his immensely melodious voice and artistic craftsmanship, particularly suitable for typically semi-classical ghazal singing.

Here I am posting some of my favorite songs.
